How to use the generator

  1. Pick quote or invoice. A quote has a "valid until" date. An invoice has a due date.
  2. Add your business details. Tick "I'm registered for GST" if you are. That turns an invoice into a tax invoice.
  3. Add the customer and the work. One line per item: what it is, how many, and the price each.
  4. Check the preview, then print it. Choose "Save as PDF" in the print window to email it.

What a tax invoice needs in Australia

If you're registered for GST and a customer asks for a tax invoice on a sale over $82.50 (including GST), you must give them one within 28 days. The generator covers what the ATO lists:

  • The words "Tax invoice"
  • Your business name and ABN
  • The date it was issued
  • What you sold, with quantity and price
  • The GST amount, or a note that the total includes GST
  • For sales of $1,000 or more, the customer's name or ABN

Questions

Is this quote and invoice generator really free?

Yes. There's no account and no sign-up. Fill it in, then print it or save it as a PDF from the print window.

Is anything I type sent to WattlePing?

No. The document is built in your browser. If you tick "Remember my business details", they're saved on this device only, and you can clear them any time.

When is it a tax invoice?

If you're registered for GST, choose Invoice and tick "I'm registered for GST". The document is then titled Tax invoice and shows your ABN and the GST amount. For sales of $1,000 or more, the ATO also asks for the customer's name or ABN, so add it.

How is GST worked out?

Each line is quantity times unit price, rounded to the cent. GST is 10% of the subtotal, rounded to the nearest cent. If you enter prices that already include GST, the GST is one-eleventh of the total.

Does it check my ABN?

It checks that the number is well formed, using the ATO's published check-digit rule. That doesn't prove the ABN is active or belongs to you. Use the free ABN Lookup to check that.

I'm not registered for GST. What should my invoice say?

Leave "I'm registered for GST" unticked. The document is titled Invoice, charges no GST, and says no GST has been charged. You still need to show your ABN if you have one.
